Casa Cornelia Law Center is a nonprofit public interest law firm providing quality immigration legal services to victims of human and civil rights violations who are eligible for humanitarian legal protections. The Law Center specifically assists those who cannot afford to pay an attorney and are in Southern California (San Diego, Imperial Counties). All services are free of charge.

  • Asylum Seekers – persons fleeing persecution or torture from their home countries
  • Victims of Crime- noncitizens who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking
  • Noncitizen Children – displaced, neglected, and/or abused children and youth

Internship Opportunities

Casa Cornelia Law Center offers internship opportunities for law students (“Law Clerk Internship”) and undergraduate/other graduate students (“Administrative Assistant Internship”). Internship opportunities are either paid or taken for academic credit. We invite you to apply and be part of our efforts to provide quality pro bono representation to those in need.

Candidates are selected according to the needs of the law firm, as well as the interests and skill sets of the interns. We accept students for the following sessions/semesters:

    • Fall – August through December
    • Spring – January through May
    • Summer – June through August

Students must commit a minimum of 12 hours per week to Casa Cornelia. All students participate in a required orientation workshop prior to the beginning of each internship session. They are offered opportunities to participate in professional trainings and webinars, and may have the opportunity to accompany a legal team member to court hearings. The internships are all in person. Maximum hours are 15 hours during the school year and 20 hours during the summer.

We have a limited number of paid internship opportunities each year. However, we are open to working with students who are interested in doing an internship for unit credit or via a grant/scholarship.

We strongly encourage applicants of diverse backgrounds to apply.

Law Clerk Internships

The Law Clerk Internship is open to law students. Law clerks will work directly with a staff attorney in one of our legal programs: asylum, victims of crime, or children’s program. Law clerks will research case law, statutes, and country conditions. They may participate in client interviews, draft declarations of abuse suffered, help the client gather needed documents for their case, and other legal research as needed. In addition, students may draft trial briefs and assist with trial preparation.

2L or 3L students are preferred as law clerk applicants. They must have strong research and writing skills, be detail-oriented, and have a desire to gain practical experience while helping others. Fluency in a second language is desired.

Administrative Assistant Internships

The Administrative Assistant internships are open to undergraduate and other graduate program students. Administrative Assistants do not work directly with the attorneys or the client. They provide administrative support to the non-legal programs (Support Services Program, Volunteer Interpreter and Translator (VIT) Program, Pro Bono Program) and/or administrative support to the legal programs.

The administrative support may include research of resources to support the varied needs of asylees, victims of crime, and children; reaching out to networks that can support our clients as they struggle to not just survive but thrive; participating in various outreach opportunities with educational institutions, community engagement events; reviewing news stories relevant to our work and preparing commentary for the leadership team as required by the specific support program, and various administrative needs such as data entry, mailing, and filing.
