Program Assistant, Pro Bono Program

The Firm:
Casa Cornelia Law Center is a public interest law firm providing quality pro bono legal services to victims of human and civil rights violations with a primary commitment to the indigent within the immigrant community in Southern California. Our legal services include representation of those in removal proceedings or seeking affirmative immigration relief including asylum seekers, abused and abandoned children, and immigrant victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other serious crimes who are eligible under U.S. law. CCLC provides pro bono representation through its staff with the support of volunteers, such as private attorneys, law students, and interpreters/translators under the mentorship of CCLC attorneys.

The Program:
The Pro Bono Program furthers the mission of CCLC by recruiting, training, and coordinating the work of licensed attorneys and law students who provide volunteer service within CCLC’s core legal programs. Volunteer attorneys recruited and trained by the Pro Bono Program serve in all of CCLC’s core legal programs and function as counsel of record on the cases assigned to them. The Pro Bono Program ensures that these attorneys are appropriate for service within the relevant program, assigns cases, and matches the attorneys with CCLC staff mentors. The Pro Bono Program is also CCLC’s primary point of contact with law firms, in-house counsel offices, law schools, and similar organizations. The Pro Bono Program is also responsible for interviewing and selecting law student interns and assigning these students to work with appropriate CCLC staff. The Pro Bono Program also serves a crucial role in representing CCLC in the community including with potential supporters.

The Position:
The Program Assistant, Pro Bono Program, is a non-attorney professional serving within the Pro Bono Program that provides general administrative support to the program staff and volunteer attorneys in furtherance of CCLC’s mission.

Note: This is a part-time temporary position supplementing the existing staff currently on leave of absence. This is an in-person position.

Appointment and Accountability:
The Program Assistant, Pro Bono Program, is hired by the Executive Director and is accountable to the Managing Attorney, Pro Bono Program.

Primary responsibilities:
The Program Assistant, Pro Bono Program, will discharge the responsibilities of the position by:
a) providing general administrative support to the Pro Bono Program staff and volunteers;
b) implementing firm processes to assure the optimal functioning of the program;
c) tracking cases for placement with volunteer attorneys;
d) preparing case summaries;
e) communicating with volunteers and potential volunteers as requested;
f) assisting in case file and database maintenance;
g) assisting in the collection of program data;
h) learning and utilizing our case management system’s key functionalities to meet Pro Bono Program, administrative, client and volunteer-related needs;
i) assisting with events for volunteers and other Pro Bono Program stakeholders, including virtual events; and,
j) assuming responsibility for other tasks as assigned by the Managing Attorney, Pro Bono Program, and the Legal Support and Strategy Director.

Qualifications:
The following are required for appointment as the Program Assistant, Pro Bono Program:
a) A commitment to social justice and the mission of CCLC;
b) A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or an associate’s degree and two years of relevant professional experience;
c) Excellent communication skills;
d) Must be detail-oriented;
e) Willingness to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment; and,
f) A demonstrated commitment to serving indigent populations.

Candidates for the position of Program Assistant, Pro Bono Program, with the following additional qualifications will be given priority:
a) Prior experience working in a law firm;
b) Prior experience in the immigration law field;
c) Prior experience working with volunteers;
d) Prior experience working with an online case management system;
e) Fluency in language(s) frequently spoken by CCLC clients; and,
f) Experience working in a not-for-profit.

Law Student Internship Announcement:
Law Clerk Intern

Organization Overview:
Casa Cornelia Law Center (“CCLC”) is a 501(c)(3) public interest law firm providing quality pro bono legal services to victims of human and civil rights violations, with a primary commitment to the indigent within the immigrant community in Southern California. Our legal services include representation to those in removal proceedings or seeking affirmative immigration relief including asylum seekers, abused and abandoned children, and immigrant victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other serious crimes who are eligible under U.S. law. CCLC provides pro bono representation through its staff and the support of volunteers, such as private attorneys, law students, and interpreters/translators under the mentorship of CCLC attorneys (private attorneys and law students) and VIT team (interpreters and translators).

Law Student Paid Internship Opportunity
CCLC is offering a temporary opportunity to interested law students to work as a law clerk intern with staff attorneys in our Victims of Crime, Children’s and Litigation (Asylum) programs. Students may research case law, statutes, and country conditions. They may assist in drafting court pleadings such as motions, pre-hearing briefs, and appellate briefs. They may assist attorneys in trial preparation, draft declarations, prepare administrative filings, and participate in outreach to potential clients.

Areas of Practice: human rights; immigration law; pro bono; public interest; asylum; unaccompanied minors; representing immigrant victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other serious crimes.

Hourly Pay, Benefits, Time Commitment, and Additional Details:
The internship is temporary and paid at $21.37/hour. The law student will participate in a required orientation workshop prior to the internship. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Casa Cornelia’s work and mission. Benefits during employment include Paid Time Off (PTO) as applicable; Paid Sick Leave (PSL), as applicable; Participation in Casa Cornelia’s retirement 403(b) plan; and Health/Dental/Vision/Group Life Insurance & AD&D/LTD, as applicable.

The internship hours must occur on a fixed schedule during regular business hours between Monday and Friday. The time commitment for the law clerk this summer will be 30-35 hours a week (plus meal breaks) for a minimum of ten weeks but not to exceed 90 days. Please note that the internship is expected to be in person.

NOTE: This is a temporary paid position; we will not provide internship class credit for this opportunity.

Qualifications:
Law clerk interns must have strong writing skills, research ability, be detail-oriented and have a strong desire to gain practical experience while helping others. Fluency in a foreign language, such as Spanish, is desired.

Staff Attorney, Victims of Crime Program

Compensation: $74,675-$89,095 (DOE) (Exempt)

The Program:
The Victims of Crime Program is CCLC’s program dedicated to representing noncitizen residents of our community who have been victimized in the United States or en route to the United States, and are eligible to regularize their immigration status on account of such victimization. Clients include survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other crimes, as well as their derivative family members. The most common forms of representation provided by the program are self-petitions pursuant to the Violence against Women Act, petitions for U nonimmigrant status, and petitions for T nonimmigrant status. The program occasionally provides representation in other immigration applications, such as affirmative asylum and removal of permanent resident conditions for battered spouses. 

The Position:
The Staff Attorney, Victims of Crime Program, is an attorney serving within the Victims of Crime Program that provides high-quality direct representation to a substantial number of clients. They may also be assigned cases from other CCLC program areas. 

Appointment and Accountability:
The Staff Attorney, Victims of Crime Program, is hired by the Executive Director upon recommendation by the Legal Director and is accountable to the Managing Attorney, Victims of Crime Program, and the Legal Director. 

Primary responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney, Victims of Crime Program, will discharge the responsibilities of the position by:
a) ensuring that individual clients are treated with dignity and are fully apprised of their legal rights and situation;
b) recognizing the vulnerability of the immigrant population, especially those experiencing trauma, and accommodating for cultural diversity;
c) screening applicants for services and providing Know Your Rights presentations;
d) providing direct, high-quality representation to a substantial number of clients primarily from the Victims of Crime Program but also as assigned from other programs;
e) supporting the collection of program data;
f) assuming responsibility for other tasks as assigned by the Managing Attorney, Victims of Crime Program, and the Legal Director. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Staff Attorney, Victims of Crime Program, does not have any supervisory responsibilities. 

Qualifications:

The following are required for appointment as the Staff Attorney, Victims of Crime Program:
a) A commitment to social justice and the mission of CCLC;
b) A Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-Accredited law school;
c) A license to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction and being in good standing with the relevant licensing authority (a California license may be required);
d) Oral and written fluency in Spanish or another language frequently spoken by CCLC clients;
e) Strong analytical and writing skills and the ability to prepare persuasive and thoughtful legal documents;
f) Willingness to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and detail-oriented environment; and,
g) A demonstrated commitment to serving indigent populations through public interest law. 

Candidates for the position of Staff Attorney, Victims of Crime Program, with the following additional qualifications will be given priority:
a) Immigration law experience;
b) Experience as a practicing attorney;
c) Experience in effectively managing diverse or various assignments;
d) Fluency in additional languages frequently spoken by CCLC clients; and,
e) Experience working in a not-for-profit.
