A Call to Compassion: Step Forward. Stand for Justice. Change a Life.

On any given day at Casa Cornelia Law Center, a mother fleeing violence sits across from an attorney for the first time. A child who crossed borders alone begins to tell a story no child should have to tell. A survivor of human trafficking takes a fragile but courageous step toward safety.

These moments do not happen by chance.

They happen because someone decided to show up.

Since 1993, Casa Cornelia has provided pro bono legal services to asylum seekers, unaccompanied children, and survivors of serious crimes who cannot afford representation. Our mission is grounded in justice, compassion, and respect for human dignity. We believe every person deserves due process, a fair hearing, and the chance to rebuild their life in safety.

But the need is growing — and we cannot meet it without you.

What It Really Takes

Volunteering at Casa Cornelia is not about being perfect. It is about being present.

It takes:

  • A commitment to human rights
  • Professional integrity
  • Empathy and patience
  • A willingness to learn
  • And the courage to say, “You are not alone.”

Whether you are an attorney, a bilingual professional, a student, or a community advocate, there is a place for you here.

Attorneys: Your License Can Protect a Life

If you are a licensed attorney, your skills are urgently needed.

You do not need immigration law experience. Most of our volunteer attorneys come from other practice areas. What they bring is dedication to due process and the rule of law — and we provide the training, mentorship, and step-by-step guidance.

Volunteer attorneys receive:

  • A comprehensive two-hour training (with MCLE credit)
  • Templates and case materials
  • Direct mentorship from our experienced immigration attorneys
  • Ongoing education in trauma-informed lawyering and gender-based violence

Whether representing an asylum seeker in court or helping a child secure humanitarian protection, you become a lifeline at a pivotal moment.

The time you give may span months. The impact will last a lifetime.

Interpreters & Translators: Help a Story Be Heard

Our clients speak more than 55 languages. Many are navigating a legal system in a language they do not understand.

When language becomes a barrier, justice is at risk.

Fluent bilingual volunteers play a critical role in ensuring that clients can tell their stories fully and accurately. No formal certification is required — only fluency, professionalism, confidentiality, and care.

With just a few hours:

  • You can interpret a client’s first meeting.
  • You can help translate a declaration that may determine legal protection.
  • You can ensure fairness in a system that depends on clarity.

Language volunteers do more than translate words — they protect rights.

Fundraising Volunteers: Fuel the Mission

Every case requires resources. Every victory requires support.

Fundraising volunteers help sustain the work that keeps families together, protects survivors of violence, and safeguards children navigating complex legal systems alone. By strengthening community engagement and expanding awareness, you multiply our impact.

Justice needs advocates in the courtroom — and champions behind the scenes.

You Will Not Walk Alone

Volunteering at Casa Cornelia means joining a community committed to compassionate justice. We provide mentorship, professional development, and space for reflection. From trauma-informed practice trainings to community gatherings, we ensure volunteers are supported as they support others.

This is not transactional service. It is shared advocacy.

Why This Moment Matters

In 2024 alone, hundreds of cases moved forward because volunteers stepped up. Yet families continue to seek protection. Children continue to face immigration proceedings without guaranteed counsel. Survivors continue to fight for stability.

Each one deserves representation.
Each one deserves dignity.
Each one deserves someone willing to stand beside them.

That someone could be you.
